Overview

What this course is

Two diploma routes into nursing practice. General Nursing and Midwifery runs about three years and prepares you for hospital nursing; Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery is shorter and oriented towards community and maternal health. Both combine classroom teaching with supervised clinical postings.

Subjects

What you study

Anatomy and physiology, medical and surgical nursing, midwifery and obstetric care, child health, community health nursing, mental health nursing and nutrition - with extensive clinical postings in wards, theatres and community settings from early in the programme.

WhoShouldChoose

Who this suits

Students who want to enter nursing without committing to a four-year degree, at considerably lower cost. Auxiliary nurse midwives in particular are the backbone of rural and community health services and are recruited steadily by state health departments.

CareerReality

The honest reality

The ceiling is lower than the degree route and it matters: many hospital posts, most supervisory grades and nearly all overseas routes require B.Sc Nursing. Plan the post-basic B.Sc upgrade from the start rather than discovering the limit at thirty. Clinical postings are physically and emotionally demanding from the first year, and shift work including nights begins during training. Verify that the institution is recognised by the state nursing council before paying fees.
