What the work involves

Day to day

Direct patient care on a ward or in a department - administering medication, monitoring vital signs, dressing wounds, assisting procedures and keeping accurate records. Nurses spend more time with patients than any other clinical role, and are usually the first to notice deterioration.

02

Who this suits

Fit

People with genuine stamina, emotional steadiness and attention to detail. Demand is strong across India and internationally, and government posts carry solid job security. It is one of the shortest routes from Class 12 to a stable clinical career.

03

The honest reality

Read this one

Physically hard work on rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and festivals. Private hospital pay in India is low relative to the responsibility carried, which is a major reason experienced nurses leave for the Gulf or the West. Nurse-to-patient ratios are often far higher than they should be, and abuse from distressed families is not rare.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is government nursing better than private?

Government posts offer stronger security, pay scales and pension provisions. Private hospitals hire faster but pay less relative to the responsibility carried.

What is the hardest part of the job?

Nurse-to-patient ratios that are frequently far higher than they should be, which makes both the workload and the emotional cost heavy.

Is GNM enough, or do I need B.Sc Nursing?

GNM works for entry, but most supervisory grades and nearly all overseas routes require the degree. Plan the upgrade early rather than late.

How do nurses handle abuse from families?

It is unfortunately common in distressed situations. Hospitals differ a great deal in how well they support staff, which is worth asking at interview.
