Career outcomes
A course supports eligibility and preparation. It never guarantees a particular job.
How to reach here
Overview
Original research over several years leading to a thesis - coursework first, then a supervised research project, publication and a viva. Entry is through fellowship examinations such as NET or GATE, or through an institution's own entrance test and interview.
Subjects
Coursework in research methodology and your discipline in the first year, then the research itself: reading the literature, designing and running experiments or fieldwork, analysing results, writing papers and finally the thesis. Teaching assistance is often part of the arrangement.
WhoShouldChoose
People with real curiosity and tolerance for slow progress, who want to work on a question nobody has answered. Fellowships pay a living stipend, so unlike most postgraduate study it need not be funded from family money.
CareerReality
Five or six years is typical and postdoctoral positions usually follow, so a permanent post may not arrive until your thirties. Far more doctorates are awarded than there are faculty and scientist positions, so many capable researchers leave the field - that is the base rate, not a comment on ability. Supervisor quality decides the experience almost entirely and a poor one can cost years. Stipends are modest and sometimes paid late. Mental health difficulty among research scholars is widely reported and under-supported. Go in because the work compels you, with a clear plan for industry or data roles if the academic path does not open.
