Overview

What the trade is

Two years after Class 10, covering everything from a split AC to commercial cold storage. Demand climbs with both incomes and temperatures.

Subjects

What you learn

The refrigeration cycle, compressors, gas charging, electrical controls and fault diagnosis, across domestic units through to chillers and cold chain equipment. Refrigerant handling is regulated and the rules are tightening, so the handling certification is part of the job rather than an extra.

WhoShouldChoose

Who it suits

People who want repeat customers. Annual maintenance contracts give an independent technician something rare in the trades — income that arrives whether or not anything breaks. Employers include AC service companies, appliance brands, facility management and cold chain operators.

CareerReality

The honest part

It is seasonal. Summer is relentless, winter is thin, and the money has to be managed across the year rather than spent in June. Much of the work is on ladders and rooftops in the heat. Skipping the refrigerant handling certification will close doors as enforcement improves.
