Overview

What the trade is

One year after Class 10. Every building needs water in and waste out, which makes this one of the few trades with demand that does not follow the economy closely.

Subjects

What you learn

Pipe work in metal and PVC, water supply and drainage layout, sanitary fitting, and reading a building services drawing. Most institutes now add solar water heating and pressure systems, which is where the better-paid domestic work has moved.

WhoShouldChoose

Who it suits

People who want to end up working for themselves. Plumbing has low tool cost, constant repeat demand and customers who find you rather than the other way round. It rewards reliability over speed — the plumber who turns up when promised is remembered.

CareerReality

The honest part

Employed plumbing pays modestly; contracting is where the money is, and that needs customer trust and basic accounts as much as pipe skill. Conditions are often unpleasant and emergency call-outs do not respect evenings. Formal certification counts for less here than reputation, which helps you slowly and hurts you fast.
