What the work involves
Day to day
Treating livestock, running vaccination and disease control programmes, artificial insemination services and meat and milk hygiene inspection across a rural veterinary dispensary or block.
Who this suits
Fit
Veterinary graduates who want a gazetted post with security and clinical work. Livestock is central to rural incomes in India, so the role carries genuine standing in the community and steady demand.
The honest reality
Read this one
Rural posting is guaranteed and facilities are often poorly equipped and understaffed - you may be the only veterinarian for a large area. Large animal work is physically hard and occasionally dangerous. Emergency calls come at night. The degree is five and a half years including internship, which is a long investment, and private practice pays better in cities than the government post does anywhere.
