What this is
Understand the role
Training athletes or teams in one sport — technique, physical conditioning, tactics, competition planning and the psychological side of performance. Coaches work at every level, from school and academy beginners to state and national squads.
What the work is
Day to day
Running sessions morning and evening, planning training cycles around a competition calendar, selecting squads, analysing performance and opposition, managing injuries with medical staff, and dealing with parents at junior level. At academy level it also involves recruitment and retention, because the academy needs students.
What you need
Capability
The recognised route is the NIS Diploma in Sports Coaching from Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, which is sport-specific and selects partly on your own playing record. National federations also run their own coaching certifications in levels, and international bodies certify in several sports. A B.P.Ed or M.P.Ed can substitute or supplement. Above all, a genuine playing background — it is difficult to coach a level you have never reached.
What people get wrong
Read this one
Believing that having played well is enough. Coaching is a separate skill from performing, and the certification exists because the two do not transfer automatically — some of the best coaches were ordinary players.
The other misjudgement is income shape. Coaching pays modestly at academy and school level and well at senior institutional level, and the distance between them is years plus results. Many coaches build the income by combining a school or academy post with private and group coaching rather than by relying on one.
