- Varies
- Qualification
- Typically Bachelor of Arts (BA).
What the work involves
Day to day
Studying how societies, institutions and communities actually work - through fieldwork, interviews and data. Graduates work in development organisations, research, government programmes, CSR, user research and policy.
Who this suits
Fit
People interested in understanding communities from the inside rather than through assumption. Qualitative research skill has found unexpected commercial demand in product and design teams, alongside the traditional development sector.
The honest reality
Read this one
Development sector pay is low and much of the employment is project-funded, meaning contracts end when the grant does. Fieldwork can mean extended periods in difficult rural conditions. Most substantive roles expect a master's. The subject is intellectually rich and financially modest, and it is fairer to say that plainly.
