What the work involves
Day to day
Assisting in locomotive operation or maintaining railway rolling stock and infrastructure. Assistant loco pilots work long duty periods on the footplate; technicians maintain equipment to schedule in sheds and depots.
Who this suits
Fit
ITI holders wanting a government job where the trade certificate is the actual eligibility. Railway employment carries strong job security, defined pay scales, medical cover and quarters, and a clear promotion ladder for loco pilots.
The honest reality
Read this one
Competition is severe - applications per vacancy run into the lakhs, and the selection cycle from notification to joining can take a long time. Loco pilot duty is irregular, away from home, and involves night running; fatigue and the psychological weight of level-crossing and track accidents are documented problems in the service. Initial postings can be anywhere in the zone.
