Day to day

Assessing and treating mental illness - depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, addiction. Consultations are long and largely conversational, combined with medication management and coordination with psychologists and families.

Fit

People who can listen without rushing, hold difficult material without absorbing it, and stay steady with patients who may be distressed or hostile. Demand across India is far greater than supply, and stigma is slowly reducing.

Read this one

Progress is slow and relapse is common, which is hard if you want visible results. Stigma still affects the speciality itself, and families sometimes discourage it. The emotional load is real and psychiatrists need their own support structures. Rural infrastructure for mental health remains thin.
