Day to day
Diagnosing and treating problems of bones, joints, muscles and ligaments, from fractures and sports injuries to arthritis and spinal conditions. The work splits between trauma, which is unpredictable and often overnight, and planned procedures such as joint replacement.

Physically the most demanding surgical speciality; the instruments are heavy and procedures are long. Trauma call is unpredictable. The field is also competitive to enter and increasingly dominated by expensive implant technology, which shapes where you can realistically practise.
