Optometry (B.Optom)

retail chains + clinics

Remote

Qualification
Typically B.Sc Allied Health Sciences.
01

What the work involves

Day to day

Testing vision, diagnosing refractive error and eye conditions, prescribing spectacles and contact lenses, and referring anything that needs an ophthalmologist. Many optometrists work in eye hospitals, chains or their own practice.

02

Who this suits

Fit

People who want patient-facing clinical work with predictable hours and a realistic route to independent practice. Uncorrected refractive error is enormous in India, so the underlying need is genuine.

03

The honest reality

Read this one

The profession is not as clearly regulated in India as in other countries, and the boundary with retail optical work blurs - many roles are effectively sales positions with a clinical veneer. Independent practice needs capital for equipment. Some employers value you for spectacle turnover rather than clinical judgement.
