01

What the work involves

Day to day

Two jobs in one: obstetrics is pregnancy, labour and delivery; gynaecology is the surgical and medical care of the female reproductive system. You run antenatal clinics, perform deliveries and caesareans, and manage conditions from fibroids to infertility.

02

Who this suits

Fit

People who want a mix of clinic work, surgery and emergency medicine in a single speciality, and who can build trust quickly with patients discussing private matters. Demand for female practitioners is particularly strong across India.

03

The honest reality

Read this one

Babies do not arrive during working hours, so the on-call burden is relentless and hard to plan a life around. This speciality also attracts a disproportionate share of medico-legal complaints, because outcomes are emotive and expectations are high. Burnout rates are significant.
