What the work involves
Day to day
Teaching a language to adults - corporate English or communication training, foreign language classes, or coaching for international language and immigration tests, usually in short intensive programmes.
Who this suits
Fit
Fluent speakers who can explain structure clearly. Demand from corporate employers, students going abroad and outsourcing firms is steady, hours are flexible, and freelance and online delivery both work well.
The honest reality
Read this one
Income is per-batch and irregular, and there is little job security in institute employment. Test preparation work is repetitive once you have taught the same syllabus enough times. Rates for English training are under pressure from oversupply, whereas less common foreign languages pay considerably better - the language you choose matters more than the teaching skill. Certification is expected for the major foreign languages.
