Strong science graduates who want research with national purpose. Several of these routes pay you a stipend during a training year and then absorb you directly, which makes them among the best outcomes available from a B.Sc or M.Sc without a doctorate.

The honest reality

Read this one

The entrance examinations are extremely competitive with few seats against very large applicant numbers, and preparation is a serious commitment with no guarantee. Government scientist pay is well below what comparable technical people earn in private industry and the gap grows over a career. Work is compartmentalised and, in defence establishments, restricted from publication - so external academic recognition is limited. Postings are to specific establishments and are not negotiable.
