archaeology, teaching, UPSC
- Remote
- Varies
- Qualification
- Typically Bachelor of Arts (BA).
What the work involves
Day to day
Studying the past through evidence - sources, interpretation and argument. It leads into teaching, archaeology, museums and archives, civil services, research, publishing and increasingly heritage and documentary work.
Who this suits
Fit
People who read closely, argue carefully and write well. Those are transferable skills, and history remains one of the strongest civil services optional subjects. Public interest in heritage and documentary content is rising.
The honest reality
Read this one
Direct employment in the discipline is limited and concentrated in academia and government, both of which recruit infrequently and expect a doctorate. Teaching posts require the eligibility examination. The subject also sits in a politically contested space in India, and research can attract pressure that has nothing to do with scholarship.
