Day to day

Analysing spatial and satellite data - mapping, change detection, terrain and land use analysis - for planning, agriculture, environment, infrastructure, utilities and disaster response. The work is technical and software-driven.

Fit

Geography, environment or science graduates willing to become properly technical. This is the clearest route from a humanities degree to well-paid private-sector work, and satellite data availability has expanded the applications considerably.

Read this one

Much of the routine work - digitisation and basic mapping - is repetitive and increasingly automated, so staying employable means moving toward analysis and programming rather than operating the software. Python and remote sensing science are effectively required now, not optional. Many short GIS courses sold privately are shallow and will not get you hired.
