01

What the work involves

Day to day

Diagnosing and repairing vehicle engines and systems - servicing, overhauls, electrical faults and increasingly electronic diagnostics. Modern vehicles are as much software as machinery.

02

Who this suits

Fit

People who like taking things apart and understanding why they failed. India's vehicle fleet is enormous and ageing, so repair demand is steady in every district, and an experienced mechanic can open a workshop.

03

The honest reality

Read this one

Electric vehicles are the live question. Drivetrain repair work will shrink over the coming decades and upskilling to high-voltage systems is no longer optional for a young entrant. The work is dirty and hard on the back and hands. Authorised service centre pay is low relative to the skill, and margins in independent workshops depend on parts.
