What the work involves

Day to day

Shaping how a film or show looks and how it moves - camera, lighting and framing, or cutting the footage into its final rhythm. Both are craft disciplines learned mostly by assisting.

02

Who this suits

Fit

Technically minded creatives with patience for apprenticeship. Streaming has multiplied the volume of content being produced in India and with it the demand for competent crew, including in regional language production, which is where much of the growth is.

03

The honest reality

Read this one

You will assist for years before you are trusted with your own project, and getting on to sets depends on who you know. Work is freelance and project-based with gaps between jobs and payment terms that are often poor. Shoot days are long, and post-production means punishing hours near delivery. Equipment ownership helps you get hired and costs a great deal.
