Day to day

Installing and maintaining surveillance and security systems - cameras, recorders, cabling, network configuration and remote access. Increasingly the work involves access control and alarm integration too.

Fit

People comfortable with both cabling and basic networking who want a trade with recurring revenue. Annual maintenance contracts turn one installation into years of income, which is the real attraction of the business.

Hardware margins have been squeezed hard by cheap imports, so installation and maintenance fees are where the money is. The technical side keeps moving toward IP and cloud systems, so anyone who stops learning becomes unemployable. You will have access to footage of people's homes and businesses, and handling that responsibly is a genuine obligation, not a formality.
